The Rising Cost of Food, and the Help That Makes a Difference

Michelle Jaquez had just moved to Harlem with her four children, including a school-aged son, when a text message came through about a back-to-school health and wellness fair hosted by Public Health Solutions’ WholeYouNYC social care network WholeYouNYC and ModifyHealth. Saturdays are usually a workday for her, but she decided to come anyway, joining more than 1,000 neighbors who turned out that day.

That choice paid off. With four kids to feed, Michelle knows how quickly grocery costs add up, and at the fair she was connected to food pantries in her new neighborhood.

“Food is expensive, and I am grateful to have been connected to food pantries,” she said.

For a mom settling into a new community, knowing where to turn makes all the difference. Michelle’s experience reflects what so many families told us that day: the need is real, and so is the help. As New York City’s largest provider of WIC services, a trusted resource for SNAP enrollment, and the lead social care network for Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens, Public Health Solutions is proud to help families like Michelle’s find the food and support they need, so no New Yorker has to face rising costs alone.
